Chapter Six

Collin

Because the adults in the room couldn’t collectively come up with a better way of figuring out who should go in what order on their dates with Tasha, we did the only fair thing any of us could think of and … drew straws. The more length to the straw, the longer the drawing man had to wait for his date. I, of course, got the shortest straw, which honestly wasn’t too much a disappointment for me. As the old saying goes, you want to be first or last, but not in between. Pete, naturally drew the straw of medium length, leaving Aaron to withdraw the long straw, and inadvertently making him my biggest competitor in this challenge.

Nevertheless, I was able to come up with an amazing date idea at the 11th hour, which is all the more impressive when you realize that you didn’t even find out you’d be going on a date until half past the 10th hour.

However the trouble was never going to be giving Tasha an amazing date. Anyone with even only an inkling of information about the person they are going out with can concoct a beautiful date that feels personalized by one or two tiny things, and usually those are the only things the planner knows about their soon-to-be-companion. But because the date might be a first or a special occasion, we tend to create some illusory correlation between the thing that the person knows and a significant part of who we are. Not every object or fact is a snow globe from Citizen Kane. If it were, do you think this would be the state of our world right now? Of course not, because we’d have all these snow globes lying around to reveal our life stories and would be much more understanding of one another. But noooooo. Instead we’ve got Israel and Palestine trying to blow each other up all the time.

Sure, I love Dove Dark Chocolates with Peanut Butter, but that isn’t because in my formative years it was the only thing we had for dinner because even though we were destitute, we were living under the loading deck awning at the Dove Chocolate factory. That would be outrageous. True, it would make me far more interesting and would certainly explain why I eat them every chance I get … but it also kind of could just make sense that dark chocolate and peanut butter make a delicious combination and I have a constant sweet tooth that has led to more than my fair share of cavities.

So instead of trying to dress up our date to impress Tasha’s specific likes or forcing traditions and memories to be made inauthentically, we dine at a small Italian restaurant in Midtown. I have requested the night off from work -- probably the first night off that I’ve requested in my entire career -- and I take the opportunity to let Tasha tell me who she is rather than trying to make her into who I want her to be.
